Hydro-byen i Glomfjord (Hydro-Town in Glomfjord)
Description
Glomfjord
Prior to the war, the town was in Glomen, while during the post-war period the town was relocated in Haugvik, near the factory complexes. Regarding the concessions that Norsk Hydro received from the Norwegian government (Staten), there was a stipulation that a regulation plan be developed in the Haugvik area. In addition it was noted that the company provide the employees with inexpensive residences and sites. The Glomfjord plan was developed by the architect Preben Krag in 1947 and was referred to as "the plan for the Hydro-town" or "the plan for the town site". It is a zoned plan with a clear division between the various areas: industrial, administration, business premises, residential and recreational. This plan built upon an existing site and the topography of the area. That which was used by the Haugvik Smelting Plant complex was also planned to be used when Norsk Hydro took over. It was also an obvious determinant for the localisation of the industrial area. The lower industrial area was localised by the fjord, while the upper area was situated on a ledge in the terrain, roughly 100 metres above the fjord. The rest of the town was located to the east of the upper factory, protected by the mountains and hills. From the actual town area there is no visual contact with the fjord, only the magnificent mountains on the south side.
If one considers the plan area more in detail, one will find that the town centre area/town square was positioned between the residences and the upper factory. Thus the old repair shop building, from roughly 1920, formed one end of the rectangular-shaped town square. At the same time it was a part of the factory area. In 1947 the sports ground was localised behind the town centre, this is also where it was located before the war. However in 1953, it was moved towards the west in the plan area, due to a lack of centrally located housing sites. For the most part the residences were localised east of the factory and the town centre. The school and the church were positioned at Vassaksla, the range of hills between Øvre Haugvik and Lille Glomvann. The streets in the plan area followed the tracks in part, such as the streets Kaivei, Nordhaugvei and Glomvei which led to the "pre-war period town" in Glomen. New streets were constructed into the gradual curves in the residential area.
