The workers' residences at Jæra were built starting in 1916 and onwards. There were four rows of residences, organised along the streets Øvregate and Nedregate. Altogether there were 21 houses, in addition to three one-storied workers' barracks, which were located on the outskirts of the area. Along the street Nedregate there were nine two-storied residences with the long sides facing the street, along with two one-storied residences which had the short sides facing the street and the long sides facing the park in the centre. Along the street Øvregate there were five, matching two-storied residences on the lower side of the street and on the upper side was Dampkjøkkenet (steam kitchen), appearing monumental above the upper end of the park, flanked by residences on each side.

There were several blocks with four flats and communal residences (for workers without families), gathered in a combined area, a highly populated area and a relatively spacious garden, which Jæra established. Due to its size, this type of residence appeared similar to a manor. In this respect the workers' housing from roughly 1920 can upon first glance, appear camouflaged in buildings of a size and form which previously belonged to another class of citizens.
