At Dønnes Gård the cluster of houses and farm buildings is situated in a sheltered spot below the mountain Dønnesfjellet and surrounded by tall deciduous trees from southern climes. Right next door is the medieval church, Dønnes Church. The farm's history spans a period of 800 years, the first 700 as the main seat of the Dønnes estate, which was one of the largest in Northern Norway.
Most of the buildings date from the end of the 19th century due to a devastating fire in 1892. In accordance with the ideals of the time, the new buildings were given a disciplined and simplified version of the Swiss chalet style. This is particularly manifested in the large main farmhouse, which is wide and tall sitting on high stone foundation walls, and it also has the typical tall cross windows and a pitched roof veranda on the garden side.
