Hamsund gård (Hamsund gård, Knut Hamsuns Childhood Home)
Description
Hamsund, 8294 Hamarøy
Hamsund Gård was Knut Hamsun's childhood home during the 1860s. It's relatively small as farms go in this area, but it has a beautiful location with magnificent views from just below the hill Søråsen. There are now three buildings on the farm set out as a linear structure with the barn to the south, a washhouse in the middle and then the farmhouse to the north. In the past there were also two smaller buildings southwest of the washhouse. The remaining buildings' style is typical of the first half of the 19th century even though they have been subject to alterations and extensions up until the 1950s.
Adjacent to the farmhouse is a garden with flowers, shrubs and trees surrounded by white wooden paling. The land between the farm's buildings and the main road is more or less flat and easy to manage. At the back the land is steep and now mainly overgrown with trees. The track behind the buildings was the old road through the hamlet.
In 2007 Hamsund Gård was given protected status in accordance with the Norwegian Cultural Heritage Act. The listing includes both buildings and cultural landscape.
