Description

The combined cattle and hay barn also have a combination of constructions. The ground floor, for the animals, has log walls whilst the upper hayloft is timber frame, though both have the same simple vertical cladding made up of boards side by side (no overlap). The roof has a round log ridge purlin and rafters. The oldest part of the birch bark and turf roof has decking made out of logs from small trees, split logs and narrow boards. The foundation walls in the older part of the barn are roughly hewn drystone with cement mortar added later. The barn's extension on the west side has concrete foundations.
