Description

Skibotn
Skibotn Marketplace is an open air museum overlooking the fjord and is situated on land just above the beach and the main road E6. Some of the buildings are from the time when there was a thriving market here from the 19th century until the 1950s. The old market area is now surrounded by houses, a campsite, a chapel and commercial buildings, the large Rasch House and Nord-Troms Museum's office building at Skibotn.

Of the original permanent market stores only two have survived and these are called "Aunebuene" as they were owned by O.L. Aune of Tromsø. They are thought to be the only ones among all the old markets across the whole of region of Nordkalotten (the areas of Norway, Sweden and Finnland north of the Arctic Circle) and were purchased by Nord-Troms Museum in 1991. The two other market stores are reconstructions erected during the early 1990s when the museum's office was also built. Later additions include a smithy and a well with a well sweep.

The Skibotn Market was first mentioned in written sources in 1571 and is therefore regarded as one of the oldest and most important markets in Northern Norway. It was the largest market in Nord-Troms and had its golden age during the 19th century. Due to its geographical location Skibotn is a natural meeting place for the different groups of people living all across Nordkalotten. The village did in the market’s heyday have a very high density of houses and market stores.

Skibotn Market also became an important preaching field and meeting place for the missionaries and followers of the Laestadian pietist revival movement.
