Bratrein (Bratrein Farmstead)

Reinøya
Situated at the southwest side of Reinøya and facing Langsundet the Bratrein Farmstead has well maintained old buildings. Its fields are on the narrow strip of land between the hillside and the shore and some of them are quite steep. The farmstead has four buildings: the farmhouse, the storehouse, the combined animal and hay barn and the boathouse. They are typical of coastal farms built during the 19th century and are very much as they were around the year 1900.
The farmstead has continuously belonged to the same family and the buildings have over the generations been altered and extended according to changing needs. Each building has an interesting story and many of the materials used are recycled from elsewhere on the farm or even from other places.
In 2011 Bratrein was given protected status in accordance with the Norwegian Cultural Heritage Act as an example of a North Norwegian coastal farm where their livelihood was based on both farming and fishing. The listing not only includes the four buildings, but also some of the cultivated land and the beach with an area going into the sea.
