Description

Skippergata 11, Tromsø
Skippergata 11 (street address), or the Møller Estate as it is often referred to as, is one of few existing town estates with various farm buildings in Tromsø. The main building was built around 1830 and was declared a listed building in 1942. Up until the 20th century, Tromsø had primarily wooden Empire style buildings with a rectangular centre district situated in relation to the waterfront and backed by terrain. The Møller Estate is located in a district that did not follow the strict rules, due to the topography and an old main traffic artery. The Tollbodalmenningen and the street Nordre Tollbodgate act as a fire lane, which was regulated by the town's founders in the 1840s. On the west-side is the street Skippergata, where the façade of the dwelling house is located. This area is a remaining section of roadway that existed before the town was established, and follows the natural curves of the waterfront. Towards the south-side of the property lies the street Søndre Tollbodgate, which was originally the street to the Customs Office in Skansen.

Yterberg (N.A. Ytreberg 1946, p. 376) writes this about Skipergata 11 in Tromsø's Town History:
Since roughly 1830, the customs officer Mejer's Residence (Møller Estate), stands literally unchanged, with a serene Trondheim style portal situated on a symmetrically designed façade. Nicely proportioned adornment details, a storehouse, other farmhouse buildings, a courtyard, an old garden encircled by the original picket fence are all characteristic elements of the old city estates in Tromsø.

Today the two-storied main structure serves as an office building.
