Description

The altarpiece is structured in a manner typical of both the 18th century and the Friis-epoch in Nordland. It has a plinth, main tier with wings and a swan neck pediment, the latter very much a baroque feature. The wings are flat, each with a painted acanthus leaf and an angel, again a typical baroque feature. Otherwise the slim pilasters and cornices as well as the painted figures are typical of the rococo style, prevalent during the second half of the 18th century, details which along with the marbled paint on the wood are characteristics of the Friis-epoch.

The central panel depicts the nativity scene with the virgin Mary and baby Jesus on her lap. Joseph stands behind her sheltered by the architectural structure (the stable) and in front of her are several figures leaning towards the child. Mary is the dominating figure in her flowing, light and shining robe. The other figures are elongated and in movement. Altarpieces from the Friis-epoch seldom depicts the nativity, as the last supper, the crucifixion and the resurrection are the most common themes. It has been suggested that the central panel was painted by Gottfried Ezekiel, but there is uncertainty about this as the painting technique is different from his other works.
