Herredshuset (The Council House)
Description
Gjerdåsveien 2, Bodø
The old Bodin Council House is situated by the main road just outside Bodø city centre. The building complex consists of four different blocks, all of different sizes and heights. Each block has a rectangular/square shape with a pitched slate roof and all are built using the same materials
brick and concrete. The design of each block reflects what is going on inside: long rows of windows indicate offices and the block with the very large window and decorated gable contained the district council chamber.
Breaking a large volume into smaller parts according to what happened inside was very typical of architecture from the 1950s. The architect Odd Irgens (1910-1988) worked in Bodø during the post war reconstruction era.
