Hekkingen Light Station is located at the northern end of the island Hekking east of the much larger island Senja and signals the approach to Malangen and Tromsø. Completed in 1859 the one and a half storey wooden keeper's cottage has a tower crowned by a red lantern room. The buildings at the station lie shoulder by shoulder on a row and they include, as well as the lighthouse: a machine shed, outbuildings and a newer keepers' cottage. There are also an old stone oil bunker, a boathouse, a landing place and the remains of an older boathouse. The landing conditions are good for smaller vessels. In spite of modernization the station has kept much of its original character.

In 2000 Hekkingen Light Station was given protected status according to the Norwegian Cultural Heritage Act. The listing includes the light house, the keepers’ cottages, machine shed, the former livestock barn, the outbuilding, and the boathouse and oil depot.
