Fiskernes servicestasjoner (Fishermens Service Stations)
Description
Honningsvåg
The fishermen's service stations, three white warehouse-like buildings, are centrally located innermost in Vågen in Honningsvåg. The harbour and the complex are protected from the elements, by an outer jetty and the inner pier. Built in 1955, 1958 and 1961, the service stations contain sheds for fishing equipment, storerooms and social facilities for both visiting and local fishermen. Today they are still used by the fishermen and until 2003 were owned and administered by the Women's Fishery Association Service Station, a group that originated from the Women's Fishery Association Polarfront.
These three buildings are erected as independent units with the gable facing Vågen and the other end anchored in the street Sjøgata. Each one is a large rectangular two-storied wooden building with a saddle roof. They stand on piles in the sea and have a quay running around three sides of the building. The northernmost building, of the three units, is in most accordance with the pre-war architectural tradition in Northern Norway. While the other two represent more innovative architecture with tradition as a point of departure. In 1995 the complex was declared listed. To a large extent it is authentic in relation to the period of construction. The interior of the central building was severely damaged by a fire during the Christmas of 2003.
