"Dverberg kirke" (1 of 5)
Description
The octagonal Dverberg Church is situated in the vast open landscape on the east side of the island Andøya. It was designed in 1841, completed and consecrated in 1843 and built in empire-style. Its body is simple and well balanced, mainly a result of the altar being inside the octagonal space. At the top of the sloping roof sits an octagonal spired turret containing the church bell.
During the negotiations regarding the new church the congregation expressed that they wanted it to be octagonal. This was agreed, but the Ministry of Church Affairs wanted to build a church without a tower because of the extreme weather conditions. However, the rector protested on behalf of his parishioners arguing that sailors and fishermen really needed the tower for safe navigation and a landmark for locating fishing grounds as not having it would end in loss of lives and boats. So, they got a tower too.
