"Rådhus Mo i Rana" (3 of 5)
Description
In 1964, an open architectural competition was held to design a municipal centre with a town hall and cultural institutions such as a community centre, cinema and library in Mo. The prioritization of cultural functions demonstrated a desire for its inhabitants to not just work but also really and truly “live in Mo”, as was stated in the general plan from that year. The proposal submitted by the architects Are Telje, Fredrik Torp and Knut Aasen was declared the winner and this formed the provisional starting-point for the three architects’ joint architectural concern. There was quite a long time lag between the results of the competition being announced and the town hall being completed. The construction of the town hall section’s three blocks was completed in 1969, the community centre was completed in 1972 and the cinema, expanded to incorporate a theatre function as well, was opened in 1979. The provisional plan submitted by the architects was considerably reduced and changed en route.
