"Valjok kapell" (4 of 5)
Description
Inside, there are a number of carved ornaments in the form of thin scratch marks and small notches accentuated with red paint. The patterns are of a distinct Sami character. They were the work of the church builder, John Isaksen. The motif in the middle of the front of the gallery is a circular arch containing a cross, with triangulated notching along the inside and the outside of the arch. On either side is an arrow shape facing outwards. These carvings also incorporate many small, inscribed ray-like triangular shapes that show signs of having been cut out using the tip of a knife
these are a very standard form in Sami wood and bone carving. The curved form with the cross and rays is repeated on both the sacristy doors on the inner wall of the choir.
The arrow-shaped ornamentation on the front of the gallery has been taken locally to indicate the north and south compass points. Similarly, the arch with the triangulated notching and cross is taken to represent a shining, Christian firmament. Altogether, they probably stand for Christ or God’s radiation from or presence in heaven and on earth.
