"Hydro-boligene i Glomfjord" (5 of 7)
Description
The Hydro type 204 residence, also by Selmer, was developed in 1949/1950. It was used both as a detached house and the units could also be adjoined into a terrace house - it was particularly suited for linked houses. In Glomfjord, on the corner between the streets Bjarne Eriksens vei and Christopher Kiellands vei, six of these linked houses were built, four in one row above and two below. The house itself is two-storied and has a rather compact form, due to the fact that it has a roughly square-shaped ground plan. A number of elements are largely reminiscent of traditional central chimney houses. Consider for example the plan, with a central chimney and hallway, the kitchen and the dining room which is surrounded by a living room. This plan solution was often used during the first half of the century in Norway. As a modernised version it became a characteriser of many 1950s "husbank houses". Originally Selmer had planned to have two large bedrooms, bathroom and closet on the second storey. Yet already by 1951 the plans were adjusted on both stories. These changes resulted in a larger living room at the cost of the kitchen, along with a third bedroom. The type 204 residence also had a one-storied annex, and as a joined version this became a central building between two housing units. Here the direction of the ridge of the roof was turned at a 90 degree angle in relation to the main house. In this way variation was created, as well as a nice outdoor area next to the residence.
