Description

The Hydro type 201 residence was developed in 1946 by Selmer. It is a two-storied wooden building with a rectangular plan form and has a low-pitched saddle roof. A storeroom and vestibule are annexed to the building as separate volumes, and provide two sheltered outdoor areas. One provides light to the entrance, and the other a roofed and protected outdoor area connected with the garden. The plan solution of the house is rational and well-designed. On the first storey there is a hallway, stairway and kitchen near the entrance side, while the living room and dining room face the garden. On the second storey there are three bedrooms and a bathroom. The rectangular hallway provides space for a row of cabinets and room for a sewing/work area below the window - a typical Selmer-solution. The type 201 residence was a further development of one of Selmer's first prize winning buildings from an architecture competition for residences designed for the burned areas in Northern Troms and Finnmark - held in 1945. For the Hydro project a metre was added to the width of the building and the form of the storeroom/entrance was altered, something that led to the removal of the characteristic glass veranda, which has a door from the living room.
