Description

The route of the Aerial Ropeway no. 5 from Mine 5 in Adventsdalen to the Junction Building crossed over the roofs of Sysselmannsgården (the Governor of Svalbard's residence and offices). A wide metal net was suspended above the house to protect it from potentially falling buckets, though traces of rust and coal can still be seen on the building's roof. The net has now been removed, but in the days it was still there, it and the Junction Building's towering dominant position were often seen as symbols of the tension between the commercial interests (the mining company) and the authorities.
