Description

The Cathedral of Northern Light is a focal point in Alta's town centre and it is situated at the western end of the pedestrianized main street whose axis ends (or starts) at the church’s main entrance and tower. The street has carefully designed paving, planting and furnishing. This photograph was taken whilst the work was still in progress.

There was a lot of discussion about whether the church should be named as a cathedral, as it is where a bishop has his/her seat. However, when Alta in 1999 branded itself as the town of northern lights, the Cathedral of Northern Lights soon became the working title for the new church, which was being planned. Not until 2012 did the Diocese of Nord Hålogaland agree the title Nordlyskatedralen Alta kirke (Alta Church the Cathedral of Northern Lights) that is the main church in Alta Deanery.
