The National Archives of Tromsø is a separate institution. However, its location on campus provides easy access for researchers at the university to research materials. It opened in 1988 and was designed by Arkitektkontoret Amundsen. The building is two-storied and rectangular with a strong horizontal quality, and a rigidly solid design made of brick, suitable for the function. Only a small part of the complex is visible for passing visitors, while the largest part of the building, the actual archives, are located multiple stories underground.
