Mortengården is situated on a clearing in an area of woodland called Folkeparken (the people's park) south west of Tromsø's city centre. The farmstead faces west with views over the sound Sandnessundet. It consists of altogether seven log buildings with pitched turf roofs and load bearing roof joists parallel with the ridge (in Norwegian: åstak). The farmhouse has vertical wooden cladding painted yellow ochre on the main sea-facing facade, otherwise the buildings mainly have no external cladding. All buildings, except the grain barn and the shed, have roof ridges parallel with the sea shore. Mortengården's various buildings originate from different farms around the county of Troms, and they were moved here after the Second World War with the intention of creating an example of a typical 19th century coastal farm. In spite of the many different kinds of buildings there are still two missing: a cattle barn and a hay barn. Mortengården is now part of the collections of the museum Perspektivet Museum, which took it over from Troms Folkemuseum.
