Description

Kongens gate 23, Bodø
Bodø Town Hall has a monumental form and location in the Bodø town centre. The town centre area includes the level land by the shoreline and an incline that ascends relatively steeply up to a new plain roughly 20 metres above the sea. The town hall (like the church) is situated on the brink between the slope and the upper flat plain. The town hall complex occupies the majority of the block on the lower side of the street Kongens gate. In 1959 the actual town hall was constructed along the street Kongens gate, and the library wing along the street Havnegata was built in 1967. The complex along the street Kongens gate is tripartite in form and function - with a seemingly detached tower toward the west, main section that has a municipal council hall in the middle and an office wing in the east. The form of the building is simple, with lovely details for example on the adornment above the windows of the municipal council hall on the second storey.

Blakstad (1893-1985) and Munthe-Kaas (1890-1977) designed multiple central buildings in Bodø that were a part of the reconstruction work performed after World War II, such as the Bodø Cathedral. The town hall is clearly modelled after Renaissance architecture, the tower is reminiscent of a clock tower (campanile) and the municipal council hall is positioned on a high second storey (piano nobile).
