Gállogiedde (Myrnes søndre, The Farmstead Gállogiedde)
Description
Øvermyrnesveien 38, 8534 Liland
The Forest Sami farmstead Gállogiedde is situated high and free under the mountain at the innermost part of Evenesmarka, with view of the surrounding area, neighboring villages, and Ofotfjorden. The Norwegian name is Myrnes søndre. The buildings stand as they have since the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, and in addition, a residential turf hut and a shelter shed have been rebuilt on the upper side of the courtyard. The various buildings on the farm had different functions. There are a main house, barn with loft, well, storehouse, and bakehouse/woodshed.
The first permanent settlement at Gállogiedde dates from the late 1700s when the reindeer herding Sami Jon Nilsen and his family settled down. The area in and around the forest villages was well known to the reindeer herding Sami; every spring they moved from winter pastures in inland Sweden to summer pastures along the Norwegian coast. Many of the reindeer herding Sami eventually became permanent residents, and it is this settlement that largely forms the basis for today's forest villages.
Gállogiedde is today a deserted Forest Sami farmstead and part of the Sami museum association. The museum tells about the people and the place in our recent past.
