Description

Harstad Hospital is situated at Kaarbøjordet west of the town centre and enjoys views of Vågsfjorden to the north and east. The building complex consists of a main six storey block with several lower wings on a right angle. The dominant external wall cladding is precast concrete elements with exposed aggregate finish. The windows are made in aluminium with external orange Venetian blinds and these do brighten up the otherwise grey exterior.

A group of architects led by Knut Peter Motzfeldt won the competition for the design of the hospital in 1967. Troms County Council agreed to build a modified version in 1970 and the Norwegian Directorate of Health gave its final approval in 1973. The new hospital was opened on 14th of December 1976.
