Description

Saltstraumen
With a gentle arch, this magnificent bridge spans the narrow channel Saltstraumen, at the point where the Saltfjord and the Skjerstadfjord meet. Saltstraumen is the world's strongest tidal current. Daily fluctuations of ebb and flow through this narrow channel create large vortices in the water. The bridge is a box bridge of prestressed concrete. Slender pillars, two of which are placed on a small island, support the bridge. The bridge was constructed using the "free standing" principle
a corbelled formwork extends outwards towards the middle.

The bridge is situated in an alluring landscape - which is also a popular tourist destination. In addition, the bridge is a part of the Tourist Road Project on the classified road Rv 17.

The bridge was completed in 1979, and the following year it was awarded the Concrete Prize for high quality architecture.
