The bank Bodø Sparebank was established in 1857, and later became Sparebank 1 Northern Norway. The previous building burned down during the bombing of Bodø in 1940. The new building was dedicated in 1950. A smaller addition towards the south, designed by the architect Per Andreas Hofstad was added in 1969, and in 1982 there was an extensive expansion of the building towards the street Dronningens gate.

The banks Sparebank and the Nordlandsbank are situated on the street Storgata, on each corner of the intersection with the street Rådhusgata. In conjunction with this important site, these two buildings from the reconstruction regulation plan of 1943 were slightly withdrawn from the roadway. In this way a square was formed at this intersection, something that emphasises the buildings in relation to their surroundings.

Sparebank's form has apparent Modernist features - such as the flat roof and the smoothly plastered façade. On the other hand the entrance, which is located on one corner, is modelled after Classical architecture.
