Åsvær Light Station is situated on the islet Andersbakken on the southern side of the fjord Åsenfjorden and northwest of the larger island Dønna. The red 18.5 m tall lighthouse has a wide conical shape and stands on a 4.5 m tall ashlar plinth. The station's main buildings, the lighthouse with the keepers' quarters and machine shed, stand close to each other, and there are also a boathouse and two landing places. About one hundred meters away from today's light station, built in 1917, are the striking remains of its predecessor dating back to 1876. The two combined give the islet a dramatic silhouette, which stands out in the immediate surroundings of low islets and islands.

In 2000 Åsvær Light Station was given protected status in accordance with the Norwegian Cultural Heritage Act. The listing includes the lighthouse with its lantern and all the other buildings at the station. The whole islet is a protected area in accordance with the Norwegian Nature Conservation Act.
