Description

Åsvær Light Station was established in 1876 and signals the coastal shipping lane. The original station suffered several rounds of severe weather damage, and following a hurricane in 1917 it was declared unfit for use. The new station with the cast iron tower was built on another high point further to the east. Electrification took place in 1960. In 1980 the lighthouse was automated and the permanent live-in staff left the station. The light station is managed by the Norwegian Coastal Administration on behalf of the Norwegian government whilst the land is in private ownership.
