Description

Kristen Nygaardsgt. 37, 9915 Kirkenes
The director's house is situated on an elevation on a sloping terrain just to the east of the lake Førstevann, with a magnificent view to the north over the centre of Kirkenes and out towards Bøkfjorden. This was a private home for the directors of A/S Sydvaranger, as well as serving as a show home for important visitors.

The body of the building is a rectangular shape, consisting of two spaces of unequal size, both of which have flat roofs. The facades are of smooth-rendered concrete and vertical panelling painted in a light colour. The east-facing main entrance is situated in the lower of the two spaces. The main entrance is set into the wall, and to the left-hand side of it is a glass panel with glazing bars. The larger space is clad with panelling and has rows of unadorned square windows. On the sloping terrain a walled courtyard has been created. The load-bearing wall is built of rough quarried stone, and from the garden there is a flight of steps up to the main entrance of the house.

The director's house was completed in 1962 and has many features showing signs of functionalism, such as the right-angled spaces, the windows and the simplicity of detail.
