Since 2013, the mining town at the innermost part of Billefjorden has been home to 8–10 people who work at Hotel Tulipan and as tourist guides during the summer, all employed by the Russian state-owned mining company Arktikugol. During the darkest winter months, a few people remain in Pyramiden to maintain the buildings and oversee the generators. Hotel Tulipan accommodates guests in newly renovated rooms or Soviet-era rooms and offers food service and a bar with history embedded in its walls. The hotel was originally an apartment block that was converted in the 1980s.
