"Vilgesvárri" (3 of 4)
Description
The original cattle goahti housed sheep, goats and cows. By the 1990s it was very dilapidated and a new one was built on the same spot. Its plan is rectangular and constructed in the traditional goahti way with load bearing wall poles and curved rafters. Both the walls and the roof are clad with birch boards, and then covered with birch bark and a layer of turf on the outside. The builders were skilled using traditional Sámi materials and techniques. As when the original goahti was built, the new one was made only using materials available on site.
Nowadays the cattle goahti is an important place for sharing forest Sámi culture and history, but it is also used for serving refreshments and food.
