"Sortland kirke" (2 of 4)
Description
Sortland Church has a nave, two aisles and two short transepts close to the chancel. The latter is narrower than the nave, its floor is three steps above the nave and it has a polygonal termination. There is a sacristy on each side of the chancel. The church's internal main measurement is 28.5m x 13.9m.
The church's architect Carl Bergstrøm died in 1898 before all the drawings were ready. The main drawings were completed by other architects whilst the master builder Ole Olsen Scheistrøen prepared the working drawings and thereby put his imprint in particular on the interior. The church foundations were built by master mason Daniel Holte from Kabelvåg who a few years before had undertaken similar work on Vågan Church in Kabelvåg.
