"Dønnes kirke" (3 of 5)
Description
The church walls in Dønnes Church are built of ordinary rubble, rather than the finely quarried ashlar found in the medieval churches on Herøy and Alstahaug. At Dønnes, ashlar is used only at the exterior corners. Many of the wall openings are constructed of roughly-quarried granite
only the west door of the nave and the south door of the choir had soapstone surrounds - and these doorways were removed during the nineteenth century. In the west wall, which was torn down, there was a flight of steps in the wall, indicating that there was a loft above the nave.
