"Reine kirke" (4 of 5)
Description
The original committee to build Reine Church was careful with money and during the first years the church did not have an altar piece, organ, chairs for the chancel, candelabra and hardly any altar silverware. A simple cross stood on the altar and there was only a small booth for the vicar to retire to behind the altar. Over the years the church was gradually embellished in accordance with Norwegian church traditions. The altarpiece, sponsored by Sofus Sverderup, from 1929 is by Kristoffer Sinding-Larsen. It is a nativity scene with Joseph, Mary and baby Jesus with two shepherds. A model of a "jekt" (a broad sailing vessel used for freight purposes along the coast of Norway) from Nordland hangs from the ceiling at the centre of the nave. The model is based on a "jekt" from Rana at the beginning of the 19th century and was built by the Dane A. Nissen in 1967 (scale 1:24).
