"Hamsunsenteret" (2 of 7)
Description
The tower building's spaces are organized around a central lift-shaft clad with perforated brass. In addition, the stairs are central elements in the spatial experience. They provide a spiral movement upwards and downwards in the building, proceeding alternately through a large open space that rises through five storeys and several smaller, more intimate exhibition spaces.
At entrance level there is a reception area, shop and café. This contains information about the exhibitions, events in the Hamsun Centre and other Hamsun-related activities. In the basement there are offices, cloakrooms, public toilets and the passage linking the tower with the cultural hall.
The exhibitions are on the first, third and fourth floors and these spaces have been created to provide a varied and flexible exhibition area. Natural light is admitted to the building via dramatic "columns of light" that illuminate significant parts of the building on special days during the year.
