"Tranøy i Hamarøy" (5 of 9)
Description
Originally the Tranøy Gallery was situated in a small schoolhouse that was located at this site
it had been vacant since the 1960s. In the 1990s, this building was expanded into a row of three building units, which house a permanent exhibition of Tor Arne Moen's compelling series of Hamsun illustrations. The gallery also features changing exhibitions. In addition, there is a café where visitors can stop for a bite to eat, as well as purchase pieces of art.
From a distance, the buildings resemble a row of boathouses. The buildings have a traditional form, and a composite saddle roof. The use of materials, along with the light-coloured brick walls and the large window planes, bestows the gallery with a modern quality. The schoolhouse has been renovated, and respect was paid to the original design. The Tranøy Gallery is run by the interior designer Kirsti Skogholt Kalstad, who also did the architectural design.
