"Jacobsbakken" (2 of 9)
Description
This photograph was taken from the hillside west of Jacobsbakken (facing toward the southeast). Jacobsbakken was one of 18 copper mines the company A/S Sulitjelma Gruber had in its claim area. The site is located roughly 10 km by air from the administrative centre at Furulund by the lake Langvatnet. Mining operations at Jacobsbakken started during the mid-1890s and were shut down in 1968. During the winter and spring season the mining community was often isolated from Furulund and the rest of the world due to bad weather and dangerous road conditions. The ore was transported on a cable track. Today there is a motorised roadway of an acceptable standard leading to Jacobsbakken.
