Description

The old primary school in Vardø is actually the oldest and largest building in Finnmark that reflects the Swiss style, a style which spread throughout Europe during the second half of the 19th century. This style was a reaction against the imitation of Classical stone architecture - ideals attempting to create a national style of architecture. The lavishly detailed joinery, such as the profiled panels, carved brackets and ridge crossings, were made possible due to the technical developments made in wood carving, where the prefabrication of entire houses and the building elements was made possible. Improvements in communication (such as the steamship) were particularly important for Finnmark, also contributing to the fact that the style spread quickly. The comparatively healthy economy in the last half of the 19th century also contributed to the tremendous dimensions and emphasis on decorative details.

In terms of style the old primary school has not changed since it was built. Throughout the years certain elements have been changed, a vestibule was built with an outer door leading to the schoolyard. Today the façades still have their original stone grey colour, during an earlier period they were painted red.
