Description

The architect Peter Høier Holtermann (1820-1865) was born on Fosen in Trøndelag. He trained as an architect in Berlin and ran his own architect’s firm in Christiania from 1846. In Northern Norway he designed, aside from Saltdal Church, the Town Hall and Grammar School in Tromsø. The Grammar School burned down in 1979
the Town Hall was listed in 1981 and is still standing.

The Norsk kunstnerleksikon (Norwegian Cultural Encyclopedia, volume 2, page 272) states that “Holtermann’s architecture has a consistent, simple sobriety in his use of early Swiss and neo-Gothic style elements”. This photograph of the exterior of Saltdal Church shows a highly thought-through and consistent level of detail in the panelling architecture – panels, windows, frames, cornices and gable boards rising up to form an overall unity.
