"Kåfjorddalen" (2 of 7)
Description
This house and outbuilding were built as late as the 1960s based on a blueprint from the reconstruction era. The windows originally had a central mullion and two casements, but these were replaced around 1980. The extension containing a bedroom and a bathroom was added during the 1970s.
The architect Kirsten Sand (1895-1996) was in charge of the reconstruction of buildings for Northern Troms during the period 1945-1952, and her office was based in Skjervøy. She was very engaged in the debate about the layout and priorities for the new houses. She was a keen advocate for giving the kitchen a prominent position and to include an upstairs balcony for airing bedding and clothes, both important to ease the women's work.
