"Nyrud gård" (3 of 3)
Description
In 1918, Ingvald Eriksen (1885-1958) from Herøy on the Helgeland coast and Marie (née Sotkajævri, 1889-1975) began to cultivate Nyrud Farm. The farm eventually became the largest and best-run farm in Øvre Pasvik. According to the Finnmark standards of that time Nyrud was a modern farm, with approx. 60 mål [approx. 15 acres] of cultivated inner fields and a livestock that included four cows and a horse. The farm had its own sawmill.
Conditions for farming new land were feasible at Nyrud. The earth was good, firewood and building timber were readily available and the terrain not as prone to frost as further down the valley. The four farms in Øvre Pasvik lived well off the land, and in addition there was fish and game right on their doorstep.
