Description
Nyrud Police Station is situated right down at the River Pasvik - about 3 kilometres east of Gjøkåsen Border Station. Nyrud Police Station is the last building along Highway 885, a distance of 105 kilometres from Kirkenes. The distance from the Norwegian-Russian borderline is 150 metres. The station is situated in the wetlands area of Øvre Pasvik and extends into Pasvik nature reserve, which was set up in 1993.
The state took over Nyrud Farm in 1955. Nyrud functioned from that time onwards as either a permanent station or an outlying station for the border police. Since the construction of Hestefoss power station started in 1966, Nyrud has functioned as it does today: that is, with a permanent staff. Members of police staff are drafted in from right round the country. They need to be self-reliant, able to live alone, and also have a feel for nature and the outdoor life. Nyrud Police Station comes under the Øst-Finnmark police district, with its headquarters in Kirkenes. Duties at Nyrud consist primarily of border control along the Norwegian-Russian border line, and additionally investigating matters relating to border offences. Prevention and investigation of matters concerning animal-related and environmental crime also form part of the workload.
