"Svanvik kapell" (3 of 5)
Description
The dominant element of the interior is the richly artistic decoration of the altar panel and vaulting decoration. The baldachin altar panel has a crucifix surrounded by 14 sections depicting paintings of apostles and other biblical figures on a gold background. The composition of the paintings on a gold background provides associations with Russian Orthodox altar walls with icons, so-called iconostas. This unusual element in sober North Norwegian churches was paid for by the director of the mining company A/S Sydvaranger and created by Arthur Gustavson, who had recently created the altar crucifix in Valjok.
