Description

In addition to the works in the Red School, Harald Peterssen created another large and monumental decoration in Northern Norway. This was completed in 1946 and adjusted by the artist due to renovation work in 1982. It consists of murals on several wall surfaces at the former Troms Agricultural School, now Senja Upper Secondary School, in Gibostad, Troms. The works at Gibostad were executed in a figurative style and are still visible there.
The works in the Red School and at Gibostad are both interesting as they showcase the artist's monumental works from two different periods. The works at Gibostad represent his early period, having just completed his apprenticeship under Axel Revold and Jean Heiberg at the Oslo Academy of Fine Arts. The works in the Red School represent the mature artist, demonstrating independence, determination, and the ability to combine post-war figurative and non-figurative mural painting in the same space—a rarity in Norway.
