Description

The Red School was located in an area with schools and other public buildings from various time periods. In the background, you can see Melbu Manor with its main building and storage house from the 19th century, and to the right, the Community Center from the 1980s is visible. The Red School is seen on the left in the image. Additionally, there are schools and other public buildings from nearly every decade of the 20th century in this area of Melbu, making it particularly interesting in an architectural history context.
The Red School is a so-called hall school, a type of school building that was commonly used in post-war Scandinavia. The hall is the school's large, high-ceilinged central space with overhead lighting. Classrooms are typically arranged in two stories around the hall, and the second-floor rooms are accessed via a longitudinal balcony, as is also the case in the Red School.
Note: The Red School was demolished in June 2016.
