Description

The Red School is a hall school from 1963, designed by architect Einar Karstad.
The floor plan is rectangular, and from the outside, the building appears as a two-story structure with a raised central section that provides light to the interior. The school's central space is a large hall that spans two stories, surrounded by classrooms and offices. In the large central space, the roof is supported by blue-painted pillars/beams that slope upwards, emphasizing the structural elements. Between the pillars, the upper part of the wall is replaced with windows, allowing ample natural light to illuminate the room and its decorations.
The two end walls of the hall are adorned with large murals created by the artist Harald Peterssen (1916–2013) from Hadsel. "Fantasien" (The Imagination) is a figurative painting, while "Progressiv form" (Progressive Form) is non-figurative. In addition to the two large paintings, Peterssen also decorated the pillars and other details in the room. The hall features a harmonious color scheme in its decoration and architecture, making it a work of art in itself. Many of the original interior details have been preserved, such as the color scheme, floor, door handles, and lamps.
Note: The Red School was demolished in June 2016.
