Description
In all, Raftsund Bridge is 711 metres long and incorporates four spans, the longest being 298 metres. The sailing height is 45 metres. When the bridge was opened in 1998, the overall span was the longest "free built-out" span in the world, well over 30 metres longer than the world record at that time. The bridge was the last one to be completed of the long bridges that link together the islands in Vesterålen. The person responsible for the construction was civil architect Gisle Jakhelln in Boarch, and Aas-Jakobsen AS in Oslo were the engineers.
Other bridges in the region that are constructed in the same way are Hadsel Bridge (overall span 150 metres) and Gimsøy Bridge (overall span 148 metres).
