Description

In this modernised town, the music pavilion stands like a small temple from another time. The structure was erected by the Kabelvåg Music Association in 1927. It has a hexagonal shape and is crowned with a resilient, slate covered tent roof. The roof is supported by slender columns, which are white painted steel pipes. Crowning the apex is a spire with a silver harp, designed by the locals when the pavilion was new.

The original pavilion columns were wooden, had a Classical design with a pilaster pattern. Following World War II the old wooden columns were replaced with metal pipes, which during the restoration of the town square were painted white. The old wooden floor was replaced with a granite covering. Granite covers the remaining parts of the town square. The wooden balustrade was also removed, and the pavilion became more open and therefore further integrated with the new town square.

The pavilion has a central position in the new town square in Kabelvåg. It stands elevated, positioned in the inner square. The steps are most prominent around the pavilion, where they function both as a border and as a seating area on warm summer days. Out towards the currents and the canal the steps gradually become lower, before finally dissipating. The pavilion is actively used, and is still owned by those who built it, the Kabelvåg Music Association.
