Description

Inside, the altar niche is flanked by two high, round-arched stove recesses, of monumental appearance in this little church, which continue the arched form of the ceiling’s barrel vault and of the sacristy doors at the rear of the altar niche.

The interior colouring is remarkable, with strong red and blue detail set against golden, unpainted woodwork. These are interpreted as kofte [Sami costume] colours and are a standard feature of Sami décor. The use of Sami forms and colours, as here in Valjok, is a most unusual characteristic in older church architecture, and probably also in every other kind of architectural feature prior to very recent times. Valjok Chapel has a very high standard of decoration, about which little is known. It is not stated in sources available to date whether the Sami element was intended by the architect Harald Sund or whether this was undertaken as a local initiative.
