"Berlevåg kirke" (2 of 7)
Description
The main entrance in the eastern gable wall constitutes, together with the tower, the façade towards the other buildings and the harbour. From the entrance porch a flight of stairs leads up to the gallery and tower room, and the christening sacristy is situated under the gallery at the main entrance. To the north lies the priest's sacristy with a narrow passage leading to the choir. In the passage there is a flight of stairs leading up to the pulpit through a doorway.
The rebuilding of Berlevåg Church was approved by a royal decree of 28 May 1955. The architect for the work was Hans Magnus. He also had responsibility for the churches in Hammerfest and Mehamn. The tender for the church building submitted by contractor Rolf Thorsen of Kjøllefjord was accepted and the building manager was Ingemar J. Thoresen. The Berlevåg shopkeeper M. A. Broderstad sat as foreman on the building committee. Just before Christmas 1960, the new place of worship stood ready, and on the third Sunday in Advent the church was consecrated by Bishop Alf Wiig. He led the work of rebuilding the church in a county where altogether 27 churches/chapels and 16 rectories had been completely demolished.
